“Food, Relationships, Sociability: Nourishment as a Form of Sharing”

Target Audience: Students from UniTo, PoliTo, RIASISSU, and Collegi di Merito

Subject: Participation in the Roundtables of the Ferdinando Rossi Forum

Abstract Submission Deadline: March 15, 2024

Communication of Results: March 25, 2024

Event: April 17-19, 2024

Purpose of this Call

The Organizing Committee of the Ferdinando Rossi Forum issues this call for the selection of six abstracts, whose authors will participate in the roundtables of the Ferdinando Rossi Forum 2024.

Introduction to Forum 2024

“Tending Minds. Cultural Significance, Sustainability, and the Right to Food” is the title of the eighth edition of the Ferdinando Rossi Forum, dedicated to the relationship between humans and food. The discussion will cover various perspectives, drawing contributions from disciplines such as anthropology, semiotics, bioethics, social sciences, and life sciences. Starting with an essential analysis of quantitative aspects, such as the sustainability of the food supply chain, the conference will delve into the diverse functions and meanings associated with food, both in collective and individual imagination.

The conference will span three days, featuring experts on the topic and two moments of interaction between students from UniTo, PoliTo, and other university contexts. During these roundtables, students from the University of Turin, the Polytechnic University of Turin, or other outstanding Italian institutions (High University Schools part of RIASISSU and Collegi di Merito) will engage in discussions moderated by a Ph.D. candidate who will briefly present their research, fostering interaction among the participants.

Roundtable Theme

The act of nourishment is, for humans and other species, an experience that transcends the purely biological need for sustenance, becoming a social practice of sharing and openness towards others. Through commensality, a space of coexistence and mutual exchange is created around the table, extensively addressed by social sciences and humanities in ancient and contemporary forms. This ranges from Plato’s and Dante’s conviviality to modern mass consumption rituals in the globalized and foodified society. Even in the study of plant and animal species, forms of sociality related to the retrieval and consumption of nutrients have been highlighted.

Participants in the Roundtable are asked to reflect on how the production and consumption of food, as well as the associated imagery, either involve or exclude forms of sharing and sociability among individuals of the same or different species. The reflection can utilize a theoretical perspective, drawing on conceptual tools from disciplines such as philosophy, literature, and visual arts, as well as life sciences and psychology. It can highlight the diachronic evolution of the theme from a particular disciplinary perspective or offer a synchronic perspective, proposing the discussion of sector-specific results or studies.

Roundtable Execution for 2024

The 2024 edition includes two roundtables. The first will focus on the humanistic and social aspects, titled “human sciences”; the second will be dedicated to the technical-scientific aspects, titled “natural sciences,” in analogy with the division of the School of Advanced Studies of Turin. However, interdisciplinary contributions are encouraged.

During each of the two sessions, three students from the University of Turin, the Polytechnic University of Turin, or other distinguished institutions (High University Schools part of RIASISSU and Collegi di Merito) and a Ph.D. candidate under the selection of the Organizing Committee will engage in discussions. The moderation will be done by a student from the School of Advanced Studies “Ferdinando Rossi,” who will facilitate interaction with the audience. The roundtable aims to present, in about 7-10 minutes, a perspective on the topic expressed in the abstract of each student and a brief presentation of the Ph.D. candidate’s work in approximately 15 minutes. Following this, a debate will be opened with the audience and the roundtable on the issues raised by the presentations.

Number of Slots and Participation Requirements

This call is divided into two sections for a total of 6 abstracts: Section I will select 3 abstracts for the “human sciences” section; Section II will select 3 abstracts for the “natural sciences” section. The abstracts must, with an essential focus, open a perspective on the roundtable theme in light of the author’s academic background and interest.

Eligible for selection are abstracts written by university students enrolled in one of the outstanding Italian institutions (High University Schools part of RIASISSU and Collegi di Merito), the University of Turin, and the Polytechnic University of Turin. The committee reserves the right to vary the number of selected papers for each section in case of excess or shortage of eligible applications and based on their particular interest. Submissions from any undergraduate, graduate, or single-cycle master’s degree program at the mentioned universities or Merit Colleges are accepted. Works written by multiple authors will not be accepted.

Application Process

Submission of the abstract (max. 4000 characters including spaces) of an original presentation related to the roundtable question in paragraph 3 of this call is required. It should be accompanied by a minimal bibliography and followed by a brief biographical note about the author. This note can be submitted in the form of a letter (max. 1000 characters including spaces) or a short video (up to 1 minute). It should include the candidate’s age, university affiliation, and the degree program they are enrolled in, along with other information considered interesting for the selection by the candidate.

The abstract can be written in either Italian or English. The document must be submitted in PDF format to the email address of the Organizing Committee (comitato@forumferdinandorossi.it) no later than 3:00 PM on Friday, March 15, 2024.

Selection Committee

A committee of students, faculty, and Ph.D. candidates from the School of Advanced Studies “Ferdinando Rossi” at the University of Turin will review the submissions. Positive evaluations will be given to works that demonstrate particular originality and a thoughtful understanding of the issues related to the theme of this call. The results of the selection will be communicated only to the winners of the call via email by March 25, 2024.

Responsibilities for Selected Students

Selected students are required to participate in the roundtable of the Ferdinando Rossi Forum, which will take place in person on April 18 and 19, 2024. Here, they will have the opportunity to individually present their abstract and subsequently engage in discussions with each other on the roundtable question, opening the debate to the audience.

Organizational Notes on Event Execution

Any travel and accommodation expenses necessary for the in-person roundtable will be covered by the Organizing Committee.

Roadmap for a green future

Drimlab at Social Innovation Campus 2024

The Social Innovation Campus (#sicampus2024), launched by Fondazione Triulza in MIND Milano Innovation District has also this year the objective of involving new generations in moments of confrontation, experimentation and contamination to design together a sustainable future.

Drimlab enthusiastically participated in the initiative telling its story both on the main stage, thanks to Giulia Vogliolo’s beautiful speech (which you can catch up here from minute 1:12:38), and through a workshop dedicated to high school girls and boys presented by Fabrizio Chirico and Federica Cocchia.

It was amazing to see the enthusiasm and interest of girls and boys as we explored the streets of DrimCity together. Interest and curiosity to the themes of Social Innovation and Impact, but also to the challenges of our reality that is Innovative and Cooperative StartUp” these are the words of Fabrizio Chirico, president of Drimlab, in recounting the experience at Social Innovation Campus 2024.

The ten golden rules of environmental communication: a new podcast by Amapola!

Ten points, ten episodes, ten guests talking about the complexities, tools and opportunities involved in environmental communication.

In 2021, Amapola launched the ten golden rules of environmental communication: now, the publication has been transformed into a ten-episode  podcast! We look at the ten rules together with guests who will tell us about their own experience and discuss environmental communication tools and dynamics. The podcast is presented by our head of communication, Micol Burighel.

The ten golden rules of environmental communication: follow the podcast on Spotify!

Written by Amapola partner Sergio Vazzoler, together with Micol Burighel, the ten golden rules are a brief vademecum of good practices and survival tips for communication in the world to come. Is there a right way to communicate the environment? How can you talk about environmental questions in simple terms, without falling into the superficiality trap? And how do you manage the conflicts that often arise over these issues? In a world where sustainability has become our daily bread, we can no longer afford the luxury of poor environmental communication.

If you want to keep up with the changes taking place in communication, for work or out of personal interest or both, this podcast is for you because it talks about tools, as well as the complexities and opportunities of environmental communication. And if you think this is not really such an important question, at the beginning of each episode Signora Vox Populi shines a light on the distortions that can be generated by poor environmental communication.

The Master Mëstè 2024 selections are now open

Master Mëstè stems from the concept of the Cecilia Gilardi Foundation, which, since 2010, has been supporting deserving young individuals in their educational journey, facilitating their entry into the workforce through scholarships and internships in the fields of university studies, sports, arts, and artisan trades. In its first thirteen years of operation, the Foundation has granted 320 scholarships and backed 45 special projects, amounting to over 1.2 million euros.

Following the success of the initial two editions, which saw almost all scholarship recipients employed by the companies where they completed their internships, the selection process is reopening for young individuals up to 35 years old who aspire to gain skills and expertise in the world of artisanal work within outstanding companies in the northwest of Italy.

Applications for the Master Mëstè scholarship program, aimed at 19 recipients, are open from February 27 to May 5, 2024. The selection process will be conducted by a committee composed of members of the Scientific Committee of the Cecilia Gilardi Foundation and representatives from partner organizations. The initiative entails a study program consisting of 70 hours of classroom training (taught by university professors, professionals, and experts in labor and artisanal work, financial management, sector-specific regulations, marketing, and digital channel utilization). Additionally, it includes a paid six-month internship, from late September 2024 to March 2025, at companies and workshops in Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta, and Liguria.

Master Mëstè is a project that addresses the current challenges faced by young people and artisanal businesses. Recent data from the Turin Chamber of Commerce indicates a decrease of 416 units in youth enterprises in 2023, while artisanal businesses show a modest growth of +0.16%, a situation that has remained essentially unchanged for three years.

From Turin to Bologna: a meeting towards the creation of the Social Research and Innovation Hub in Emilia Romagna

Attractiveness, research, and territory: three words that encapsulate the deeper meaning of the meeting held in Bologna on Wednesday, February 28.

In Emilia Romagna, a virtuous path has been initiated, aiming to establish a regional Social Research and Innovation Hub, as outlined in the Regional Program for Productive Activities 2023-2025. This hub is envisioned as a space for co-creating policies and initiatives that allow social innovation to become a model for research and innovation policies oriented towards social impact.

An hub for co-creating policies and initiatives in the region

Torino Social Impact participated as a guest, bringing its experience in creating an ecosystem that promotes social impact.

It was a valuable opportunity to engage with the Emilia Romagna Region, represented by Morena Diazzi (General Directorate for Knowledge, Research, Employment, and Enterprises, Emilia-Romagna Region), and ART-ER, a Consortium Company of Emilia-Romagna established to foster the region’s sustainable growth and promote the internationalization of the research system through participation in European and international networks. ART-ER also supports the development of collaborative projects, encourages knowledge exchange, and values regional competencies and experiences.

Social economy ecosystems: Torino Social Impact’s experience

On this occasion, Torino Social Impact shared its experience, recounting its genesis in the Turin area and identifying the vision, objectives, and strategy developed at the territorial level. Attention then shifted to identifying the purpose that gives rise to social economy ecosystems, as well as the crucial role played by research.

The day concluded with a workshop where the research and social innovation system was analyzed in relation to the three scenarios of the present, future, and transition, working on the participants’ visions.

It was an important opportunity to share the experience of Torino Social Impact with a broad representation of organizations from the region, and we hope to have contributed to the establishment and success of the new Hub emerging in Emilia Romagna.

From Turin to Reggio Emilia: a meeting on the creation of local ecosystems for the impact economy

Build a shared idea of a social impact economy with third-sector organizations and businesses: this is the goal of “Reggio Emilia towards a Social Impact Economy,” a workshop promoted by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, Fondazione E35, and Laboratorio Aperto.

It was a great opportunity to participate in the day to share the experience of Torino Social Impact alongside the Municipality of Turin and a special guest: Juan Antonio Pedreño, president of Social Economy Europe, CEPES (Spanish Confederation of Social Economy), UCOMUR (Worker Cooperatives of the Region of Murcia), and UCOERM (Educational Cooperatives of the Region of Murcia).

The workshop stems from a belief: in a context where social and sustainability challenges are increasingly urgent, creating alliances between the business world, cooperatives, the third sector, and institutions becomes more strategic and necessary to define an economy that is more inclusive and competitive. An economy capable, therefore, of not leaving anyone behind.

On this occasion, the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, Fondazione E35, and Laboratorio Aperto organized a day full of appointments, showing how the city and its organizations are committed to supporting and strengthening the development of innovation and social impact through ambitious and virtuous regeneration projects.

Between Past and Future: Visiting the Reggiane Innovation Park

The first part of the visit took place at the Reggiane Innovation Park: once hosting the historic Officine Meccaniche Reggiane, it is now a redeveloped place where innovation, work, creativity, and relationships come together through collaboration between the academic and business worlds.

Suspended between past and future, it is a technological hub that brings together universities and research centers, businesses, and public administration. Here, businesses grow, and new ones emerge within a complex that prioritizes industrial research and technology transfer. Visiting its spaces, you encounter Hangar 19, the first renovated building that now houses the Technopole, with four laboratories for advanced research and technology transfer to serve businesses, as well as an incubator for innovative startups.

La Polveriera, a Place of Inclusion and Beauty

The visit then continued to La Polveriera, described as “a space within everyone’s reach“, and indeed, its motto does not deny it: inside two lateral structures and a large central square, beauty is at home and gives life every day to an active social culture laboratory, a catalyst for inclusion.

Its spaces are inhabited by different realities: the Oscar Romero Consortium, the first social consortium born in the province of Reggio Emilia, along with other social cooperatives, businesses, associations, and local entities. These entities share the belief that only through beauty can reciprocity, change, and mutual aid be generated.

In the spaces of La Polveriera, there is a workshop that produces design objects through the encounter between creatives, entrepreneurs, and vulnerable individuals; offices; a laboratory that deals with the social reintegration of women victims of trafficking; a day center; a residential center for people with disabilities; job placement agencies dealing with the work placement of vulnerable individuals; a bar-restaurant, and much more.

TSI’s Ecosystem in the Frame of the Chiostri di San Pietro

The Chiostri di San Pietro are the final stop of the experience in Reggio Emilia. In recent years, the monumental complex of the Chiostri has undergone restoration, co-financed by the ERDF, to create the Laboratorio Aperto, which works daily on experimenting with models of collaborative economy and social and technological innovation. It is in this evocative setting that the meeting “Ecosystems for Entrepreneurship and Social Impact Economy” took place, where, on this occasion, Juan Antonio Pedreño, Torino Social Impact, and the Municipality of Turin contributed to an overview of national – starting from Turin – and European experiences of territories and businesses working to support the social transition of the economy.

Today, Torino Social Impact operates in a network with an increasing number of territories and entities at the national and European levels, contributing to a constant dialogue on the creation of local ecosystems for the impact economy. If it is true that Tuesday, February 27, represented the first meeting opportunity for Torino Social Impact in Reggio Emilia, we are confident that this is only the first piece of a longer and mutual exchange and contamination path. We thank the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, Fondazione E35, and Laboratorio Aperto for this meeting opportunity, with the hope of meeting again soon.

Inauguration of the New Edition “Dream Jobs: Living Sports, Dreaming a Profession”

“Dream Jobs: Living Sports, Dreaming a Profession” is an educational proposal that celebrates the creative thinking and passion of most young people for sports, enabling students to acquire knowledge and skills useful for successful integration into the workforce or to facilitate their academic journey.

With around twenty schools from 14 regions, 885 students, and 30 teachers involved in the 2022 edition, the largest national network of Italian schools has been created, working to make sports a “magical” tool capable of fostering the growth and learning of students and providing job opportunities in very diverse areas: green technologies and efficient energy solutions, sustainability for sports facilities, advanced materials and smart textiles, neuroscience, bioengineering, big data, artificial intelligence, nutrition, wellness, marketing and digital communication, and last but not least, scientific and technological progress for an increasingly inclusive sport.

A network of facilitators from the partner Asse4 guides students in this fun sports-cultural competition, putting them in charge of co-designing video lessons, real educational paths for the development of transversal skills and orientation (PCTO). The video lessons created by the students are uploaded to the Sporters partner app to make them visible to a wider audience.

At the Sport Innovation Growth Camp, the top 8 teams participate based on criteria such as originality, relevance, creativity, quality, involvement of external figures, student protagonism, and ability to work in groups.

The Camp provides an opportunity to delve into innovation and entrepreneurship topics in the sports world based on defined lines of work. Collaboration with ASAG at the Catholic University of Milan and with the Polytechnic University of Turin ensures technical-scientific support and guidance, also aimed at building the curriculum based on the skills acquired throughout the entire professional orientation process.

Testimony of TSI in Bologna for the Research and Social Innovation Hub in the Emilia-Romagna Region

On February 28th, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, at CNR – Area della Ricerca in Bologna, we would like to express our gratitude to ART-ER (Emilia-Romagna Consortium Company created to promote the sustainable growth of the region through the development of innovation and knowledge, attractiveness, and internationalization of the territory) for inviting us to share the story of Torino Social Impact within the framework of a co-design path for the establishment of a regional-level Research and Social Innovation HUB.

The path focuses on the construction of a research and social innovation hub as a place to co-build policies and initiatives that enable social innovation to become a model for research and innovation policies oriented towards social impact.

The goal of the meeting will be to define the objectives and purposes of the Research and Social Innovation HUB.

The testimony of Torino Social Impact serves as a stimulus for discussion and laboratory activities to be carried out subsequently with the stakeholders of the territory: why the birth of the TSI ecosystem, what has been the path, and what role it plays for the territory.

This intervention, following the one the previous day in Reggio Emilia, fits into the series of testimonials that the TSI ecosystem is called upon to bring at the national level to encourage the replication of a model recognized externally as effective and impact-generating.

Torino Social Impact now operates in a network with an increasing number of territories and entities at the national and European levels and contributes to a constant discussion on the creation of local ecosystems for the impact economy. In Italy, the dialogue is active with various realities: in addition to Milan, Genoa, Trento, now Bologna and Reggio Emilia, but also some areas in the center-south.

Scintille #1 – Luca Foresti and the evolution of digital healthcare

This year, I3P, the Incubator of the Polytechnic University of Turin, will celebrate its 25th anniversary since its foundation: a significant milestone marked by the success of hundreds of startups supported over the years. To celebrate, I3P presents a new series of events titled “Sparks“: a collection of encounters with brilliant minds and prominent personalities not only from the world of technology but also from various fields, individuals who have left a lasting impact in their respective domains and beyond.

At the heart of Sparks are stories about the genesis of successful ideas, the origins of innovation, the obstacles faced, and how challenges were overcome to realize visions and establish themselves in the contemporary landscape. The aim is to inspire young talents and ignite the flame of creativity.

Sparks will debut on Tuesday, March 12, with guest Luca Foresti, a nationally renowned manager and investor. For over 14 years, Luca served as the CEO of the Santagostino Medical Center, leading its strategy, branding, technology, innovation, finance, and human resources. His mission was to provide accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services to millions, leveraging the latest ICT solutions and a customer-centric approach. His passion for entrepreneurship and social impact continues to drive him to seek and support other CEOs and explore new investment opportunities in education, sustainability, and digital transformation.

The event also provides an opportunity to delve into how a scientific background—Luca Foresti studied Physics and Financial Mathematics—can offer valuable tools and allow the application of rigorous and innovative methods to solve real-world problems, optimizing processes and outcomes, especially in the entrepreneurial field.

How to Participate:

The event will take place on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, starting at 6:00 PM, in-person at the Agorà Room of the I3P incubator, located within the Polytechnic University of Turin Campus, accessible from the main gate at corso Castelfidardo 30/A and the pedestrian entrance at via Pier Carlo Boggio 59.

Participation in the event is free, but registration on Eventbrite is required.

The Sustainability of Business

On Monday, February 26, at 4:00 PM, SAA – School of Management, Fondazione Piemonte Innova, Torino Chamber of Commerce, and Strategy in Action Italia will delve into the close connection between a solid corporate structure and the creation of a strategic and sustainability plan.

The Corporate Crisis and Insolvency Code impact all businesses, including small ones, as it places the prevention of crisis and the adequacy of corporate structures at the center of the corporate system, with a focus on business sustainability. Having a strategic plan connected to ESG policies allows for greater credibility, especially in dealings with financial institutions.

Accreditation and training credits will be granted by both sponsoring professional orders: Chartered Accountants and Accounting Experts, and Labor Consultants. The event will take place at SAA – School of Management, Via Ventimiglia 115, Turin. Participation is free upon registration at the following link.

Art reopens the historic Macario theater

A disused space in the city reopens, brought back to life by the art and commitment of the innovative startup and Benefit Society Artàporter at one of its Con/Temporary Spaces, Macario in via Santa Teresa 10/D, which from February 15 to March 7 hosts the artistic dialogue between Federico Masini and Aldo Dolcetti (curated by Valeria Ceregini) titled “Human Transfigurations.” This is the historic Macario theater where the Piedmontese actor used to perform, and its fate has remained uncertain for some time.

Art as the transfiguration of reality is revealed in this exhibition through the photographic works of Masini and the paper works of Dolcetti, both turning their gaze towards the rediscovery of the human figure in its most natural and real context. Federico Masini‘s settings of female bodies in natural contexts rediscover the naturalness and spontaneity of the human body regardless of gender.

The rebirth of spaces not conventionally linked to art but that can be revived precisely thanks to it is also interesting, which is the mission of Artàporter.

Contemporary/Space Macario is indeed one of the two spaces directly managed by Artàporter for the promotion of emerging artists throughout Italy. Direct management allows the creation of a medium-term cultural calendar, circulating beauty and creativity.

The opening of the dual solo exhibition by Federico Masini and Aldo Dolcetti will take place on Thursday, February 15, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The exhibition will be open from February 15 to March 7, every day from 3:00 PM to 7:30 PM, with free admission.

I3P Startup Academy 2024: Applications Open for the Training Program for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

From where does one start to transform an idea into a successful business? What steps need to be taken to establish an innovative startup? How does one form a team to tackle the challenges of a technology-based business project? These and many other questions will be answered by the experts from the Politecnico di Torino’s Incubator in the second edition of the I3P Startup Academy, the free training program for aspiring innovative entrepreneurs, taking place between March and May 2024.

Online applications to participate in the Academy are open from February 13 and will close on Wednesday, March 6, with evaluation in the order of submission until the 35 available spots are filled.

Similar to the previous edition held in 2023 with excellent public participation, the I3P Startup Academy 2024 training course is funded and implemented as part of the activities of the NODES ecosystem – Nord Ovest Digitale E Sostenibile (Northwest Digital and Sustainable), and its Spoke 1, dedicated to Aerospace and Sustainable Mobility, of which the I3P incubator is a partner.

Starting the Business

The goal of the course is to support aspiring entrepreneurs in their early phase, helping them give concrete shape to an innovative idea, find other members to compose a team with complementary skills, and initiate the customer discovery process, with insights into the techniques of validating entrepreneurial projects and examining the potential market.

The course will consist of five lessons and will follow an interactive mode: each lesson will be based on short sessions of theoretical preparation, business games, and open discussions with I3P tutors, external mentors, and already active startups, especially in the aerospace and sustainable mobility sectors supported by the Spoke 1 of the NODES ecosystem. The initiative aims to create a dynamic and engaging atmosphere that encourages interaction among participants, learning the basic concepts of the lean startup approach, and the possibility of meeting new potential co-founders for innovative businesses of the future.

Target Audience

The I3P Startup Academy 2024 program is aimed at individuals under the age of 35, residing in Piedmont and already holding a degree. Both teams with an initial idea for a new innovative business and individuals without a specific project, but willing to get involved by joining existing teams or creating new ones, can participate.

One of the main objectives of the program is to connect people with diverse skills to integrate existing working groups or create new ones. To succeed in this, participants should genuinely want to engage in dialogue and discussion—both with tutors and mentors and among themselves—and be willing to share their ideas and skills with other aspiring entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, the Academy initiative aims to offer equal opportunities for meeting, training, and consulting to all those interested in embarking on a startup creation path, with particular attention to female entrepreneurship and support for teams composed of women founders to promote their presence in the innovation world, still predominantly male. Aspiring female entrepreneurs, the I3P incubator is eager to meet you and support your innovative ideas toward success!

Program Schedule

The I3P Startup Academy lessons will take place on Saturday mornings, from 09:00 to 13:00, on five dates over the next three months: March 9, March 23, April 6, April 20, and May 4, 2024.

The five sessions will be held in person, mainly at the I3P headquarters, but some dates will be hosted at OGR Tech, the innovation and technology hub of OGR Torino, a partner of the incubator in creating and supporting the innovative ecosystem in the area. Participation in the initiative is free. During the application phase, interested individuals will be asked for their commitment to follow the entire program consistently and dedicatedly, culminating in building an entrepreneurial project to present at the final meeting, to make the most of the course and take advantage of the opportunities it offers.

Between each lesson, participants will also be required to perform activities aimed at testing their business idea. This means that during the weeks of the Academy, aspiring entrepreneurs will be asked to invest their time to apply the concepts, notions, and ideas acquired during the course sessions to their projects.

To apply to participate in the new edition of the I3P Startup Academy and take the first step toward creating an innovative startup, interested individuals must fill out the online form by Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at the latest. However, it is advisable to do so as soon as possible because the available spots are limited to 35, and applications will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

For more information about the initiative and program details, you can write to the dedicated email address academy@i3p.it.

Webinar “RES and Impact Investing”: How to finance Renewable Energy Communities for a just transition?

In conjunction with the entry into force of the decree from the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Safety (MASE) regarding Renewable Energy Communities and widespread self-consumption in Italy, Social Impact Agenda for Italy (SIA) initiates a research and in-depth analysis process to identify models and financing tools for CERs (Comunità Energetiche Rinnovabili) that ensure positive social impacts on the territories.

On February 20th, at 3:00 PM, the first webinar will be held, titled “CER AND IMPACT INVESTING. How to finance Renewable Energy Communities for a just transition?“. Starting from this session, SIA aims to engage in a collaborative discussion to guide technological offerings, market dynamics, and governance considerations towards business models suitable for making CERs activators of social impact, promoting sustainable and inclusive development in territories, with a particular focus on financing models and tools.

With contributions from experts, analysts, funders, and direct experiences in the territories, the webinar represents an initial moment of reflection and public discussion on the topic of impact finance for CERs, within the framework of green and just transition policies and processes that are underway.

The impact investing approach, with its characteristics of intentionality, additionality, and measurability of generated social impacts, seems to be able to drive CER experiences towards a greater awareness of underlying business models and related impacts, well beyond the horizon of environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

TSI in Liège for the European Social Economy Meeting – February 12 and 13

Torino Social Impact makes its mark at the European Social Economy Conference within the framework of the Belgian Presidency of the EU Council. TSI has also participated in the conferences during the Spanish presidency in San Sebastián and the Swedish presidency in Göteborg, confirming itself as one of the most dynamic social impact ecosystems globally.

On February 12 and 13, 2024, the European Social Economy Meeting is taking place in Liège. This event provides a unique opportunity for the social economy to bring together operators, scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders to discuss innovative, resilient, and stimulating economic models for a more social and sustainable Europe.

The Torino Social Impact ecosystem has been invited to provide a testimony during the roundtable on “Integration of the social economy: a political strategy for the future.” Raffaella Scalisi, Senior Advisor, will speak on February 13.

Placing people at the center of the business approach, the social economy offers a model of economic development based on cooperation and local rootedness.

The strength of the social economy comes from its democratic governance, involving the participation of all actors – workers, users, beneficiaries, and other stakeholders – in the management of the enterprise/organization, and its close relationship with the territory, in line with the evolving needs of the population.

The program of the Liège meeting is very diverse:

  • Three plenary sessions dedicated to each of the transitions.
  • Six workshops presenting a variety of good practices and referring to on-the-ground realities in Europe and worldwide (on the three transitions, as well as storytelling, scaling-up projects, and social innovation).
  • Four roundtables analyzing how political objectives can be put into practice (one dedicated to urban environments with the example of Brussels, the others on state aid, the integration of the social economy, and finally, the accessibility of funding and investments).

Buy Social: the third training dedicated to social impact businesses

For a social enterprise, understanding its identity is essential to improve and strengthen its presence in the market: telling its own story, having clear values, and knowing how to relate and communicate effectively.

With the European project Buy Social Future of Social Economy!, we reached out to businesses and social cooperatives in the area to provide them, through three training sessions, with the tools and skills necessary to strengthen their competitiveness and presence in the B2B market.

During the third and final meeting, which took place on Thursday, February 8, Beeozanam provided the backdrop once again. For this occasion, the trainers Daniele Consoletti, Alberto Marzetta, and Alberto Baccari accompanied us, experts in contract law, communication, and marketing, respectively.

We revisited the topics covered in the previous sessions, providing additional insights through both frontal discussions and practical activities. With lawyer Daniele Consoletti, we discussed how to draw up a contract, confidentiality agreements, and non-compete agreements. Alberto Marzetta then guided participants through individual consultations on how to best communicate their organization: emphasizing that communication must be authentic and tailored, he showed how to create effective storytelling, build a communication plan, identify target audiences, and determine which tools and channels to use.

Finally, we delved into marketing with Alberto Baccari, head of innovation. With his support, participants got hands-on experience through a team-building activity that saw them working side by side, simulating the work of a company in defining a value proposition.

The training sessions are part of the broader Buy Social! project that promotes social procurement in the private sector – the purchase of products and services from social enterprises that prioritize impact, thus enhancing business relationships with traditional companies.

The Pink Coworking at its First Anniversary

The Pink Coworking celebrated its first year of activity on February 1, 2024, with a party that involved numerous supporters. This event marked the culmination of a journey that has seen the spirit and mission of our shared workspace grow.

The Pink Coworking was born out of a tangible need: to provide a welcoming and collaborative environment for many freelance professionals, particularly women, seeking mutual support and a platform to (re)acknowledge, assert, and defend their rights. In a historical moment where social issues such as women’s rights, welfare, domestic violence, and the gender pay gap are widely discussed, the Pink Coworking aims to be a place for reflection and action to address these issues.

During the first year of operation, we worked tirelessly to promote a culture of solidarity, successfully channeling positive energy that inspired an open and inclusive community. Every active member of our community is an important piece of an ever-evolving mosaic, contributing to the care and growth of the Pink Coworking.

With much gratitude, we also rely on the support of Circoscrizione 1 of the City of Turin, which hosts us and with whom we co-design, and numerous individuals and organizations actively committed to what aims to be a social change, countering the precarious and low-wage work that particularly affects women.

A mutualistic and generative tool of Pink Coworking is the Time and Skills Bank, supported by the Active Civic Participation Lines of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation.

While thanking everyone who contributed to the success of the Pink Coworking, we also want to highlight the specific initiatives activated within our spaces, such as the Freelance Desk in collaboration with ACTA – Freelance Association, active since February 8, with a free monthly appointment on the rights and characteristics of having a VAT number. Additionally, there are Financial Education courses for Freelancers and more in collaboration with Kermasofia starting from February 17; Business Model You with Marta Giavarini, which will be presented on February 28; and Canva for the third sector with Chiara Zoia for sustainable, participatory communication, using the advanced AI features of the tool.

We are planning various activities so that the Acca Association, with its actions, increasingly enriches the sense of “doing together” for positive impact through the activation and networking skills of people in the shared care of a common good. Being part of Torino Social Impact is an important milestone in this regard.

Executive programme: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion for Impact

In the intricate fabric of relationships that bind businesses to their territories and the actors that compose them, a company is not merely an economic entity but also a social and cultural entity.

DEI’s initiatives are fully integrated into the strategic process for building new balances between economic growth, sustainability, well-being of individuals, and social cohesion.

The increasingly diverse profiles of company populations and potential recruitment pools have turned companies into true laboratories for coexistence — embracing genders, generations, individuals with different ethnic, cultural, religious backgrounds—and for social impact innovation.

The combination of constraints and opportunities (PNRR, ESG, Agenda 2030, etc.) urges companies to leverage the numerous advantages of a conscious approach to “diversity, equity, and inclusion” in human resource management, in the competitive repositioning of the company, and in strengthening synergies with stakeholders.

HR specialists must skillfully and consciously play their roles as strategic actors, purpose players, and generators of an additional and measurable impact, becoming “internal pioneers” of innovative policies and practices that are simultaneously consistent with the organizational culture and the company’s core values and ethics.

For Whom

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion path is aimed at: HR Director & Manager, HR business partner, HR Specialist, Sustainability Manager, Diversity, Welfare, Wellbeing Manager, Consultants and all those interested in the dimension of sustainability and impact on society of business choices.

  • Module 4 | Promote the work of people with disabilities for a more inclusive company for all
  • Module 5 | Impactful DEI policies: objectives, indicators and metrics

Call for Proposals “Data Driven Innovation”

Elevating the informative heritage and skills of the chamber system by adopting Open Innovation as a reference model to support the digital transformation of the Public Administration and businesses. These are the foundations of the project promoted by Unioncamere and InfoCamere, which, in collaboration with The Doers, the Open Innovation consultancy firm of Digital Magics, the leading incubator in Italy for early-stage investments in digital startups, has initiated a system-wide “Open Innovation” path that now leads to the launch of the Call “Data-Driven Innovation: Chambers of Commerce and Startups together for a Digital Italy“, targeting innovative startups and SMEs in Italy.

At the heart of the project, which undergoes its first phase of experimentation in five Chambers of Commerce (Florence, Messina, Milan, Padua, Turin), is the definition of two strategic themes for the chamber system (known as “Challenges“), aimed at the selection and implementation of experiments to be carried out in each Chamber. In a second phase of the initiative, these challenges can evolve into operational projects.

Between July and October, preliminary activities were conducted, identifying the needs of the involved stakeholders (Chambers of Commerce and businesses), defining the two thematic areas for the “Challenges” among the candidates, and setting up the necessary tools for the call, starting with the online platform for collecting applications.

The Call is open to all startups capable of providing technologies for the digitization and automation of processes, with the goal of streamlining and making internal chamber procedures more agile and productive, as well as those with external implications (Internal process automation) and/or high-innovation solutions that can contribute to improving the management of information assets by increasing the accuracy, timeliness, coherence, and completeness of the data managed by the Chamber System (Intelligent Data Analysis & Management).

In this context, the first case seeks NLP (Natural Language Processing) technologies: Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Conversational Design, Chatbots & Virtual Assistants, Virtual Testing, RPA (Robotic Process Automation). For the second type of solutions, technologies in Big Data Analysis are sought: Data Governance, Data Cleansing, Data Quality Assurance, Predictive Analysis, Sentiment Analysis.

News from the EU Project Hub: mission for social enterprises in Brussels

Within the EU Project HUB for the Social Economy, aimed at increasing European opportunities for the ecosystem, an interesting initiative is highlighted.

9-11 April 2024

This mission for social enterprises in Brussels has a dual objective:

  • Get first-hand knowledge of European collaborative funds and programmes that are interesting for social enterprises and work on the tools and processes to access them: those responsible for different funds and programmes in Brussels, as well as sector experts, will provide practical information and directly address questions and doubts from participants.
  • Matchmaking event: identify partners with whom to prepare international projects as well as potential business collaboration. The activity is organized in collaboration with the Proximity & Social Economy Sector Group of the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), and social enterprises from different European regions will participate.

Ideally, at the end of the mission social enterprises will have identified their European collaborative funds or programmes of interest and potential partners with whom to apply to those funds or programmes.

The mission will also be an opportunity to find potential collaboration beyond EU projects.

To facilitate interaction between participants, participants will be able to access a B2B matchmaking platform (profile based) two weeks before the mission.

Who can participate?

Social enterprises from the regions that belong to the Proximity & Social Economy Sector Group of the EEN, that have interest in EU collaborative funds and programmes and want to meet potential partners for international projects.
Interested social enterprises should be working on these fields:

  • Social services and care (e.g. disability, elderly, childcare)
  • People at risk of social exclusion
  • Support for migrants
  • Gender equality
  • Sustainable mobility
  • Sustainable tourism
  • Sustainable energy
  • Education and culture
  • Social innovation
  • Circular economy

Important: this is a tentative list, applications from social enterprises working on other fields can also be considered for the mission.

Cambiamenti Call: Results of Phase 2 Published

The “Cambiamenti” Call is entering its second phase, with 13 project proposals approved for funding.

Through the “Cambiamenti” Call for New Inclusive Contexts, Fondazione Time2 aims to support and accompany initiatives that strive for increased participation of people with disabilities in all contexts.

The supported idea focuses on addressing both material and immaterial barriers that restrict accessibility, participation, and protagonism of people with disabilities. This involves a reinterpretation of common perceptions related to disability and the civic, social, and cultural spaces of Piedmontese cities. The goal is to create an equitable and accessible environment capable of ensuring a full and independent life for everyone, regardless of physical and mental conditions.

Fondazione Time2 would like to express sincere gratitude to everyone involved in this journey. The Foundation acknowledges the effort made by the entities to incorporate the feedback provided in Phase 1 and appreciates the insights gained during the development of the final projects.

The collaborative approach, the establishment of trust-oriented relationships for change, and the proactive nature of the project designs constitute the first tangible results achieved by the “Cambiamenti” program. Fondazione Time2 values the commitment of each involved stakeholder in this regard.

Following the evaluation procedures outlined in the call, the Board of Directors of the Foundation has approved the participation of 13 project proposals in Phase 2 of “Cambiamenti”.

The overall quality, implementation methods, feasibility, and impact of the proposals were assessed, along with responsiveness to the issues highlighted during the initial idea review.

The funded proposals propose significant changes in approaches, favoring implementation methods that address the complexity and intersectionality of inequalities. They emphasize genuine protagonism of people with disabilities and intervene with a systemic and multidimensional vision to overcome barriers inhibiting the authentic participation and well-being of all individuals.

These projects have demonstrated a careful understanding of needs, placing the voices and aspirations of people with disabilities at the forefront. They aim to intervene coherently and measurably, utilizing resources with competence, and collaborating within broad and diverse social and cultural networks aligned with the identified change objectives.

The awarded projects are those that best propose lasting and heterodirected changes, with a realistic possibility of integrating into the regular functioning practices of the contexts.

Even for projects not admitted, the Board of Directors has decided to acknowledge the effort and work put into developing the final projects by allocating a fixed amount to cover design expenses.

Fondazione Time2 expresses gratitude to everyone for their commitment during the refinement process and wishes all Initial Ideas the best conditions for project realization.

All project proposals admitted to Phase 2

Buy Social: the second training to make social enterprises competitive in the market

How can we enhance the relationship between traditional businesses and social economy organizations to build a more sustainable and resilient economy? And how can we strengthen social economy organizations as bearers of an economic model based on the balance between social responsibility, environmental impact, and profitability?

With these central questions in mind, we kicked off the second training session, “Social Impact Enterprise: How to Strengthen Market Presence,” as part of the European project “Buy Social Future of Social Economy!

On this occasion, Thursday, January 25, we were hosted in the spaces of our partner Beeozanam, a community hub where ideas and communities are generated, born from a collaboration pact that brings together various entities engaged in social initiatives.

It was an overall day rich in insights and valuable advice. We delved into the realms of contractual law, marketing, and communication with the presence of industry experts supporting us in this journey. Among them, attorney Daniele Consoletti shared his experience with a focus on “Contract Law for Social Enterprises and Cooperatives.” Following this, Alberto Marzetta, a member of the communication agency Amapola Srl Benefit Company, provided valuable examples and advice for effective communication in his session: “Effective Communication – A Brief Guide from the Experts.”

In the afternoon, Alberto Baccari presented an in-depth session on “Market Approach Strategy,” drawing on his decade-long experience as an entrepreneur and expert in sustainable innovation.

The training was also an opportunity for organizations present to meet and get to know each other. Alongside the experts, there were moments of discussion and sharing of activities, challenges, and new opportunities. These moments of collaboration will continue with the third and final session scheduled for Thursday, February 8. Don’t miss it!

InvesTO on the territory: the initiative to support social entrepreneurship begins

Finance and philanthropy join forces to stimulate sustainable and inclusive models of social innovation, supporting Third Sector organizations through a combination of economic resources and training.
This marks the first experiment in the Metropolitan City of Turin. Over 500 cooperatives and social enterprises can submit new projects until April 24, encompassing six major areas—education, social services and disability, health, urban regeneration, environment, and culture—that address the needs of the community.
Each winning project will receive a grant of up to €30,000 and have access to an interest-free loan of up to €110,000.

UniCredit and Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT, the operational arm of Fondazione CRT for impact investing, are launching the initiative “InvesTO sul territorio” in the Metropolitan City of Turin. This initiative aims to support and finance new social entrepreneurship projects capable of generating positive economic, social, and environmental impact. Projects must fall within six macro-areas: education and training; social services, disability, and marginalization; health and healthcare assistance; urban regeneration and sustainable cities; fair and inclusive environmental transition; and cultural welfare.

Born from the collaboration between the financial and philanthropic worlds, InvesTO provides Third Sector entities with both economic resources (through a mix of grants and interest-free credits) and educational and technical support, particularly in impact assessment. This is all done to encourage sustainable and inclusive social innovation models.

Over 500 cooperatives and social enterprises, located in the Metropolitan City of Turin, can participate until April 24 in the “InvesTO sul territorio” call for projects that respond to the community’s needs. Entities that acquire social enterprise status by the deadline can also participate, aiming to stimulate the transformation processes of organizations into social enterprises.

Social entrepreneurship projects should be economically sustainable, scalable, replicable, and open to creating networks and productive chains of goods and services, even with for-profit entities. The added value will be the employment of fragile and vulnerable individuals and overcoming gender and intergenerational gaps.

“InvesTO sul territorio” is developed by UniCredit and Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT in collaboration with Fondazione Italiana Accenture ETS, in partnership with Confcooperative Piemonte Nord, Legacoop Piemonte, AGCI Piemonte (General Association of Italian Cooperatives), Forum del Terzo Settore in Piemonte, and with the technical-scientific support of AICCON Research Center and Human Foundation.

Each of the four winning projects will receive a liberal grant of up to €30,000 from Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT and access an interest-free Impact Financing from UniCredit, up to €110,000, with a maximum duration of 7 years. In addition, UniCredit will provide a “Pay for Success” disbursement of up to €5,000 upon achieving social impact goals, and Fondazione Accenture may award a special prize of up to €10,000 to the project demonstrating innovation elements that ensure greater scalability and replicability in terms of quality and quantity of beneficiaries reached.

InvesTO winners will also benefit from educational and technical support from Human Foundation for impact assessment and reporting, with the support of Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT, as well as tutoring and mentoring services provided by territorial partners.

“With this project, Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT stimulates the evolution of Third Sector activities toward an increasingly entrepreneurial logic, without losing sight of supporting vulnerable subjects and citizen well-being services,” declare President Cristina Giovando and Secretary General Andrea Varese. “InvesTO promotes the launch of initiatives with a strong economic and social impact, combining traditional philanthropic tools, such as liberal grants, with facilitated bank financing. This hybridization aims to accompany social enterprises toward economic autonomy without giving up their nature.”

“As a bank, UniCredit believes it has a responsibility that goes far beyond financing,” says Paola Garibotti, Regional Manager Northwest of UniCredit. “For this reason, we pay close attention to the needs of communities and want to guide the economic progress of the territories in which we operate, promoting a future of shared prosperity. We are truly proud to have launched, with Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT and other excellent partners, the InvesTO project, which aims to support social entrepreneurship and projects that address the needs of the community.”

Social cooperatives and social enterprises are essential pillars of employment and economic development in the Metropolitan City of Turin. It hosts 45% of social cooperatives in Piedmont (393 out of 874), generating 63% of the turnover of about €1.7 billion from the entire sector regionally and playing a crucial role in the labor market, employing 41% of the over 57,000 workers in the region (source: Social Entrepreneurship Observatory, 2021).

The Metropolitan City of Turin also plays a central role in the development of social enterprises, with 132 active units, accounting for 65% of the total in the region. The increase of 55 units in the last decade, with a more pronounced growth in the five-year period 2012-2016, indicates a growing interest in this social entrepreneurship model.

Open Day Master Open Innovation & Intellectual Property 2023-2024

Open innovation plays a significant role in the development of the competitiveness of the Italian entrepreneurial fabric today. However, managing innovation from laboratories to the market requires the creation of new cross-cutting skills—legal, managerial, financial, economic, and social—capable of implementing actions that weave the local and global networking of individuals, groups, businesses, and institutions.

To meet the growing demands for cross-cutting skills, the Ministry of Enterprises and Made In Italy has promoted the establishment of the “Interuniversity Second-level Master’s Degree in Open Innovation & Intellectual Property” since 2015. Developed in collaboration between the University of Turin, through the SAA School of Management, and Luiss Guido Carli University, through the Luiss Business School, the Master will be presented and discussed by its Directors, with the contribution of representatives from the Polytechnic of Turin Incubator (I3P) and key actors in the Turin ecosystem, during the Open Day event scheduled for Tuesday, January 30, at 5:00 PM in person at the Agorà Room of I3P in Turin.

The Executive Master, now in its IX edition, is designed to respond to the growing demand for qualified professionals in the field of open innovation and the management of intellectual property protection. The program provides skills for studying the entire life cycle of innovation, from idea conception to creation, protection, commercial exploitation, and anti-competitive uses. The training program aims to provide targeted education to managers, entrepreneurs, and professionals who wish to acquire new skills to be more competitive in the workforce. Additionally, funding for 20 scholarships of €7,000 each is provided to partially cover the fee by the Trademarks and Patents Directorate of the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy.

How to Participate

The Open Day on Tuesday, January 30, offering an opportunity to delve into the Master’s program, its educational offerings, and the steps necessary to enroll while benefiting from available incentives, will be hosted by I3P. The event will take place in person, starting from 5:00 PM, at the Agorà Room of the incubator’s headquarters, located within the Polytechnic of Turin Campus and accessible from both the main gate at corso Castelfidardo 30/A and the pedestrian entrance at via Pier Carlo Boggio 59.

BE A LADY they said

“Be a lady they said. Your skirt is too short. Your shirt is too low. Your pants are too tight. Don’t show so much skin. Don’t show your thighs. Don’t show your breasts. Be a lady they said. Don’t talk too loud. Don’t talk too much. Don’t take up space. Don’t sit like that. Don’t stand like that. Don’t be intimidating. Why are you so miserable? Don’t be a bitch. Don’t be so bossy. Don’t be assertive. Don’t overact. Don’t be so emotional. Don’t cry. Don’t yell. Don’t swear. Don’t complain. Cook his dinner. Keep him happy. That’s a woman’s job. You’ll make a good wife someday. Take his last name. You hyphenated your name? Crazy feminist. Give him children.
You don’t want children? You will someday. You’ll change your mind”

These are the opening lines of a poem written by the twenty-two-year-old Camille Rainville and performed by the former Sex and the City star, now turned activist and politician, Cynthia Nixon.

The video, now viral and incredibly powerful, created for the Girls Girls Girls magazine, analyzes the various meanings of the term “be a lady,” paired with strong images from pop culture. Watch it here.

A new meeting of the community of practice on the circular economy

Following the success of the event “Circular Economy: the city at stake” held during the Circular Days Festival, the organizations within the TSI ecosystem that are part of the Circular Economy Community of Practice gathered on Wednesday, December 20, for the last meeting of the year.

Hosted at the Beeozanam Community Hub, representatives from 13 organizations participated in the meeting. It was an opportunity to review the projects initiated throughout the year and, more importantly, to envision and plan new initiatives for 2024 through collective discussion.

Within the context of the circular economy and the promotion of sustainable initiatives, there was a shared interest in continuing the Cleanup activity carried out in September. This ecological walk through the parks of Turin engaged the community and local organizations in a collective action to clean up waste, contributing to the improvement of the environment and the well-being of our community.

The agenda also includes new networking and training sessions on circular economy topics and an intensive communication campaign targeting citizens and the city of Turin.

One of the missions of the initiated Community of Practice is precisely to promote projects and initiatives by leveraging the skills and knowledge of the participating organizations, extending them for the benefit of the community and its residents.

Sofidel wins the Reporting Oscar with the Integrated Report created in collaboration with Amapola

The 2022 Integrated Report of Sofidel, leading Italian group in the production of paper for hygienic and domestic use, obtained first place at the Oscar di Bilancio (Reporting Oscars), in the “Large unlisted companies” category. At his side in the reporting project, the consultancy company Amapola, specialized in sustainability and communication, among the partners of Torino Social Impact.

The Reporting Oscar, now in its 59th edition is promoted by the Italian Public Relations Federation (FERPI), Italian Stock Exchange and Bocconi University. The event confirms itself as a valuable observatory on the state of the art of reporting in Italy, in a moment of particular turmoil regulatory. The initiative rewards organizations that report their actions in a rigorous manner and share the results with stakeholders, with attention to economic aspects and increasingly to the environmental and social dimension.

Sofidel Integrated Report

The Sofidel Integrated Report won first prize with the following motivation: “the Sofidel Group considers sustainability a strategic growth factor and is committed to reducing its impacts on natural capital, maximizing social benefits with the aim of creating added value shared for all its stakeholders, diversifying its communication tools in an innovative way, also through inclusion in relation to stakeholders. The company communication appears to be complete and effective, with an excellent graphic design and a very detailed analysis of the risks and related management policies. The Integrated Report has already applied the concept of dual materiality and a Smart Report mode”.

«Our way of operating has always been oriented towards the transparency of results, the timely analysis of the economic and financial performance of the business, the monitoring and management of risks and constant reporting of the investments made, aimed at pursuing growth and truly sustainable development” declares Francesco Pastore, Chief Marketing & Sales Officer Sofidel. «The key tool for reading these results is the Sofidel Integrated Report. The Ferpi Reporting Oscar represents a precious recognition and a further incentive to continue the path of reporting and transparency in which we believe”.

To strengthen accessibility elements of the Sofidel Report, Amapola has built an ecosystem of dynamic and multimedia communication tools capable of bringing to life contents, initiatives and projects collected within the document. From the graphic project to the online Smart Report, from interviews with stakeholders to the summary version (all in two languages: Italian and English), each communication support has been designed to nourish the dialogue with the company’s stakeholders, in an engaging and understandable way for a large audience. «We thank Sofidel for the trust it has placed in us and for the constant discussion during the project» comments Alberto Marzetta, Amapola partner. «The 2022 Integrated Report is a great team effort, which arises from the awareness that sustainability must always be acted upon, but also told, disseminated, brought to life. Leading companies in the sustainable transition, like Sofidel, will increasingly have a decisive role in strengthening sustainability culture so that it is concrete, transparent and accessible to all.”

CA Auto Bank and I3P unveil Digital Factory, the new open innovation platform for the future of sustainable mobility

CA Auto Bank, a mobility bank operating in 19 countries, and I3P, the Incubator of Politecnico di Torino, are jointly introducing Digital Factory, a novel open innovation platform designed for Italian and international start-ups and SMEs. The initiative aims to discover the most innovative solutions and technologies to drive the digital transformation of the Bank. Projects submitted should fall within one or more of the following areas: banking, digitization and artificial intelligence, mobility, and sustainability. The selected companies will have the opportunity to engage in field testing, developing a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) to refine ongoing innovation processes at CA Auto Bank.

Digital Factory is a permanent initiative with free participation.  Project applications should be submitted via the website. Each submission will be assessed by I3P and CA Auto Bank. Applicants with compelling use cases will be contacted by the Digital Factory team to collaboratively build a business case for presentation directly to CA Auto Bank.

This initiative is part of Start&Pulse, the European program of the Crédit Agricole Consumer Finance Group dedicated to start-ups and focused on open innovation. Digital Factory is part of a sector where technological evolution has given rise to new consumer needs, offering significant opportunities for growth and service development. Digitalization means adapting all business processes to the developments of the digital age, with speed and operational efficiency playing increasingly crucial roles. Against this backdrop, start-ups and SMEs can give further impetus to responsible growth and value creation for the planet.

Digital Factory’s new platform follows in the footsteps of similar initiatives launched in 2020 and 2022, resulting in collaborations with innovative start-ups such as Stip and Reefilla. These young ventures, established in Italy and developed with an international focus, now support CA Auto Bank in revamping its customer service management, leveraging artificial intelligence and introducing new user experiences dedicated to electric mobility.

The pre-enrollments for the fifth edition of the CUAP – Social Impact Assessment close on January 26th

After the success of previous editions, the professional development university course (CUAP) “Social Impact Assessment“, supported by the Chamber of Commerce of Turin and offered by the Competence Center for Social Impact Assessment within TSI, is back.

Until January 26th, you can pre-enroll in the University Course offered by the Department of Management at the University of Turin, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Turin (members of the Committee for Social Entrepreneurship), the Piccatti Milanese Foundation, the Cottino Foundation, Tiresia, and the training organizations of Central Cooperatives (Il Nodo Consortium for Confcooperative Piemonte Nord and Inforcoop Ecipaa Piemonte for Legacoop Piemonte) and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation.

The course aims to train third sector entities and social enterprises to adopt a strategic approach to the evaluation and management of the generated social impact, in line with the guidelines of the Social Entrepreneurship Committee of the Chamber of Commerce. The training is intended for organizations that want to enhance knowledge and skills in impact evaluation, especially for those in managerial and leadership roles and those involved in reporting the effectiveness and efficiency of activities in both economic-financial and social terms or those interested in integrating the two aspects.

Through a hybrid and highly innovative didactic approach, the CUAP combines theoretical and practical approaches aimed at identifying Impact Management strategies and their measurement. A final business case completes the sharing of learning among the participants themselves. The course addresses the evaluation of social impact applied to projects for accessing European, national, or local funding, as well as to major territorial, sporting, cultural, and congress events. It starts with the assumption that every event and systemic action brings about a change that can be measured and evaluated with specific techniques mastered by impact assessors.

At the end of the course, it will be possible to obtain certification, issued by Cepas, a third-party certifying body, and its registration in the national register of Impact Assessors, along with the digital “Open Badge” certification issued by Bestr.

For this edition as well, the online format has been maintained to spread the culture of impact assessment beyond the borders of Turin, with nationwide dissemination.

Turin, the capital of impact investing with the Impact Week of the European EVPA network

Over 1,000 impact players gathered at OGR Turin and Cottino Social Impact Campus from November 22 to 24

The European impact investing community gathered during the Impact Week in Turin from November 22 to 24 with the aim of identifying concrete proposals to promote a sustainable and resilient future for our economies and societies.

EVPA, the European network for impact investing, with Fondazione CRT and Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo as anchor partners, Cottino Social Impact Campus and Fondazione Time2 as content partners, and Torino Social Impact as the glue of the rich and varied impact network of a city that has earned the title of the capital of social economy in recent years, brought together over 1,000 leaders and professionals across the spectrum of impact finance to mobilize capital for transformative change.

Impact Week is EVPA‘s annual flagship event, providing an opportunity for a global community of changemakers to encounter cutting-edge ideas, discover new trends, and engage with partners to maximize their impact on people and the planet.

After visits to Cascina Fossata, Open Incet, Via Baltea – Laboratori di Barriera, and Toolbox Coworking, organized by the City of Turin, our territory took center stage at the opening event with Guido Bolatto, Secretary General of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin, Michela Favaro, Deputy Mayor of Turin, Alberto Francesco Anfossi, Secretary of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, and Andrea Varese, Secretary of the CRT Foundation.

Special thanks go to all our partners who contributed to showcasing the TSI ecosystem: Elena Ferrero from Atelier Riforma, Emanuela Barbano from Biova Project, Monica Pillitu from Piazza dei Mestieri, Elena La Rovere from Patchanka, Sara Fortunati from Circolo del Design.

The main conversations featured young protagonists of the Impact Generation Challenge with Sara Minucci, Michele Osella from Compagnia di San Paolo, and Matteo Pessione from OGR in the impact cities panel, Giulia Mezzalama in the session dedicated to Take Care, LINKS on impacts, and Metaverso.

The Impact Deal project was presented by Ciro Cattuto, Christian Racca, Stefania Coni, experts from TOP-IX, and companies involved in the project.

The Social Impact Stock Exchange was presented in a significant discussion with Davide Dal Maso, Jeremy Nicholls, Brigitte Fellahi-BROGNAUX, and Bruno Robino.

A new European network of impact cities was designed in a workshop with Raffaella Scalisi from TSI, Coos Santing Santing from ImpactCity The Hague, and Jonas Nipkow from Social Economy Berlin. Thanks to Mariken Gaanderse for the idea and to Oscar Ugarte from Seed Capital Bizkaia for his interest.

The vision of Torino Social Impact was highlighted thanks to Mario Calderini, who participated in the sessions “Accelerating towards the SDGs finish line” and “Beyond Compliance Reporting,” with Marella Caramazza, Karen E. Wilson, and Karim Harji.

Consult the complete program and speakers’ lineup.

The European Impact Investment Market

The European impact investment market is growing, according to EVPA’s latest study, estimating the European market for direct impact investments, i.e., investments by companies addressing social and environmental challenges, at €80 billion. Social impact investments have grown by a substantial 26% from 2020 to 2021.

However, despite this encouraging growth, impact investments still represent only 0.5% of the European traditional investment market. It is crucial to accelerate the trend to address today’s pressing social and environmental needs. With the approaching deadline of 2030 for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, we need more impact investments that take risks for innovative solutions to complex social and environmental challenges, from the climate crisis to sustainable food systems.

In this context, the impact community gathered in Turin provided concrete recommendations on how impact finance actors can better mobilize resources and promote collective impact action to scale the lasting change the world urgently needs.

With “Impact Together” as the main theme, Impact Week is also a space to connect work across sectors, connect, and collaborate to navigate through the world’s crises. The conversations and sessions provided practical insights and examples of innovative discoveries in impact finance to replicate what works and collectively achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Who is EVPA

EVPA, now called Impact Europe, is the European network for impact investing, a unique network at the intersection of business and purpose, driven by knowledge and focused on impact. EVPA brings together over 300 members, a diverse group of capital providers (impact funds, companies, foundations, private equity, banks, public funders) and social innovators. Since its creation in 2004, EVPA has built a unique data hub for impact practices, trained over 1,000 impact champions, produced guidelines for defining standards and increasing impact investments, as well as for measuring and managing them. It also represents a strategic presence in the EU political sphere and plays a crucial role in global collaborations on its themes.

Seniores Online: the real and virtual platform for those over 65

On Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Rinascimenti Sociali, located at Via Maria Vittoria 38 in Turin, the presentation of “Seniores Online,” the platform for those over 65, will take place. A project by Torino Valley in collaboration with the Regional Coordination of Third Age Universities in Piedmont.

Seniores Online aims to be a social platform both in the real and virtual realms to meet the need for connection, knowledge, and information, promoting active aging in Piedmont. The project is funded through the funds allocated by the Piedmont Region for the implementation of interventions and initiatives related to the active aging plan.

The project arises from the belief that the Over 65 generation has been considered “lost” to digital for too long, while now it plays a central role in the contemporary “Silver Economy.” In Piedmont alone, there is a growing synergy among local entities that, by “working together,” strengthen their presence, proposals, and their ability to be a real and potentially virtual community.

Furthermore, the pandemic and its dramatic consequences on the elderly have demonstrated the indispensability of creating a virtual community, an online social network to connect those over 65, providing them with information and support even at a distance and in moments when traditional channels are not effective.

The goal of Seniores Online is to create a social platform both in the real and virtual realms to meet the needs for connection, knowledge, information, culture, and activities of those over 65 residing in a particular area. The Seniores Online community aims to become a factor in social innovation and a local actor, evolving into a knowledge community, an active community for change, and the construction of a uniquely rich social environment.

The morning’s program includes the presentation of the Seniores Online platform and its initiatives, as well as two debates on topics related to active aging and real and digital communities.

Program:

  • 10:00 AM – Registration and welcome
  • 10:15 AM – Introduction and presentation of Seniores Online (with Vittorio Pasteris and Gianfranco Billotti)
  • 11:00 AM – Debate: “Aging well, aging in the future” (with Massimo Aimone, Serena Bavo, Enrica Favaro, Mauro Maurino. Moderated by Vittorio Pasteris)
  • 11:45 AM – Debate: “Needs of real and digital communities” (Monica Cerutti, Roberto Dadda, Ennio Martignago, Pietro Terna. Moderated by Gianluca Ferrise)

“The Benefit Society Model for Generating Social Impact” is the title of the event conceived by Torino Social Impact in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Turin, Cottino Social Impact Campus, and in partnership with API Torino and Industrial Union Turin.

The meeting took place on the afternoon of Monday, November 27, hosted at the Cottino Social Impact Campus, creating a moment for reflection and discussion on the benefit model. The event marks the conclusion of the networking and training journey of the Community of Practice of benefit societies within Torino Social Impact, initiated at the request of participating Benefit Societies in the ecosystem and made possible with the support of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation.

Fifty participants, including Benefit Societies from the region and companies interested in embarking on this path, drew inspiration from the experiences already underway.

The event began with greetings from Guido Bolatto, Secretary General of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin. This was followed by the panel “Territorial Experiences in Comparison“, moderated by Grace De Girolamo, Communication Manager at Torino Social Impact. The panel featured Micol Burighel from Amapola, Emanuela De Sabato, a member of Futura Law Firm, Federica Fugiglando from FL20 Studio, and Andrea Toso from Synesthesia. On this occasion, the four organizations shared their journey of sharing and dialogue initiated in 2023 with the mission to exchange experiences and skills, uniting forces to multiply impacts on the territory.

Subsequently, Pierangelo Decisi, Coordinator of the benefit-ESG group at API Torino, and Marco Piccolo, Vice President of Small Industry at the Industrial Union of Turin with a focus on Sustainability, shared their experiences and knowledge in the world of Benefit Societies.

The panel “Being Benefit Societies Today: Scenarios, Profiles, and Competences” featured Nicoletta Alessi, Co-founder of Goodpoint SB and a member of the board of Assobenefit, and Caterina Soldi, Development & Program Manager at the Cottino Social Impact Campus.

Closing the event was the keynote speech by Mario Calderini, Spokesperson for Torino Social Impact and Professor at the School of Management, Politecnico di Milano.

A meeting with the Community of Practice on Circular Economy during the Circular Days

On Friday, November 24, 2023, the event “Circular Economy: the City at Stake” took place, organized by the City of Turin in collaboration with Turin Social Impact, the Chamber of Commerce of Turin, and Circular Market.

On this occasion, the citizens were introduced to two European projects, RESPONDET and SME4GREEN, aimed at developing two local action plans contributing to achieving the city’s climate neutrality goal by 2030. Over the past months, organizations from the Community of Practice on Circular Economy of Turin Social Impact have been involved through consultation meetings to identify the needs and challenges of the territory and contribute to the drafting of the two documents.

The event was part of the XV European Week for Waste Reduction and coincided with the Circular Days Festival by Green Pea, which, from November 24 to 26, offered workshops, experiences, and labs to promote circularity.

During the meeting, facilitated by Mercato Circolare, the over 40 participants engaged in a team-based game to explore key terms related to the presented project documents: circular economy, renewable energy communities, food, and packaging.

The evening also provided an opportunity to showcase businesses and organizations from the Torino Social Impact Community of Practice. These entities, serving as ambassadors for one of the “R”s of the circular economy, included: Liberitutti Cooperative with the “Ci2 – Circular Foods” project at Cascina Falchera; Triciclo Cooperative with the bike workshop and reuse center on Via Arbe; the startup Around, offering a vacuum packaging return service; Off Grid Italia with the ReuseGame project; Panacea Social Farm, a social bakery experimenting with new flours and ingredients for baking using food waste; the benefit corporation Mindful Morsel, studying how to enhance and transform excess fruits and vegetables into nutritious snacks; and finally, SIAVS Atelier Riforma, optimizing the selection of end-of-life clothing with the Re4Circular technology, directing them toward the most optimal circular strategy, including reuse, upcycling, and recycling.

The presentation of the two projects, SME4GREEN and RESPONDET, marks the beginning of a dialogue with the community on the issues addressed during the evening..

Attraction and Retention: Building a People Strategy in a Startup

Is there a formula to generate ‘value’ in the short and long term? How do you design and implement an HR strategy that attracts the best resources and retains them, considering the changing context and significant stress experienced in a startup?

In the company of some innovative young companies that have already addressed these issues, the meeting will offer an in-depth exploration of the challenges and opportunities in the field of human resources in a startup and will try to answer questions such as: what does it mean to be a functioning team? What role should a founder play? Are there assessments capable of predicting the functioning and success of a team?

The event is organized by I3P, the Incubator of the Polytechnic University of Turin, in collaboration with W Executive, a headhunting company specializing in Executive Search. The company includes two other brands: W Advisory, dedicated to consulting and organizational development, and WeHunt, dedicated to the search and selection of middle-senior management profiles.

Conducting the meeting will be Laura Cavallaro, Partner at W Advisory, and Simone Suppo, Senior Manager at WeHunt and founder of the Turin office, with the intervention of Andrea Ferrero, Founder and CEO of Young Platform, a startup born in I3P and specialized in the Crypto Fintech world.

Chamber of Deputies and Ecomondo: a November full of speeches for Atelier Riforma

At the beginning of November, the startup member of Turin Social Impact Atelier Riforma was the protagonist of two important speeches in the field of the Italian textile sector.

The first took place on 2 November, the day on which Rén collective organization – which since 2018 has been spreading good responsible fashion practices through research, dissemination, support for companies and dialogue with institutions – was summoned to the Chamber of Deputies to participate in a public hearing on the Made in Italy DDL, to express their comments regarding article 8 on textile raw materials.

By virtue of Atelier Riforma’s great research and innovation work in the field of circular fashion, Rén Collective involved the startup’s CEO, Elena Ferrero, to contribute to the work and to present it during the hearing.
The document that has been proposed is the result not only of everyone’s experience, but also of the dialogue that has taken place in recent years with the professionals and companies in the sector associated with Rén Collective. The actions proposed for the new DDL are aimed in particular at enhancing Italian circular skills, linked to textile reuse, repair, upcycling and recycling… i.e. all those practices that aim at a zero-waste fashion industry, which exploits neither the environment nor people.

“I have always liked to get active and do everything I can to contribute to improving the sector in which I work, but I have never had a similar opportunity to present my ideas and those of many other professionals so directly to the institutions. And for this I thank Rén Collective so much.” – Elena Ferrero, CEO of Atelier Riforma

The other important event for the startup took place on 8 November, on the occasion of Ecomondo, an international event for technologies, services and industrial solutions in the green and circular economy sectors.

During the event the startup spoke in two panels, both focused on the transition of the textile industry towards greater sustainability.

The CEO of the startup, Elena Ferrero – also on behalf of the Movimento Moda Responsible of which Atelier Riforma is part – was invited to moderate the panel organized by AEA Sustainable Textile, the Business Unit of Ancitel Energy and Environment focused on the Sustainable and Circular Textile sector , entitled “The Textile Revolution: Introduction to the Change and Instructions for Use”. The panel dealt with a hot topic: continuously evolving EU regulations, with initiatives such as ecodesign and extended producer responsibility, are driving the Italian textile industry towards greater sustainability, but will require a considerable commitment to modify and adapt the companies to the necessary change. What are the strategies of industrial districts and the proactive actions adopted by companies to face these challenges? The speakers of the panel moderated by Ferrero were: Filippo Bernocchi, President of Ancitel EA – AEA Sustainable Textile, Francesco Marini, Managing Director of Confindustria Toscana Nord, Nicola Ciolini, President of ALIA SERVICES AMBIENTALI SpA, and Andrea Betti, Sales Manager for the BEREDO® project by Beste.

The other panel in which the startup participated was organized by EconomiaCircolare.com and was entitled “Ecodesign, EPR, recycling, roadmap for a circular textile”. Together with Ferrero, there very important speakers such as: Francesca Romana Rinaldi (Director of Monitor for Circular Fashion), Roberta De Carolis (Researcher in ENEA), Luca Campadello (Strategic development & innovation manager Erion), Michele Zilla (General Director of Cobat Tessile Consortium), Mauro Chezzi (Deputy Director of Sistema Moda Italia and Retex.Green consortium), Erika Francescon (Co-founder of SustainME and Ecoesedra Sustainable Design partner). As discussed and as also reported in a recent article by EconomiaCircolare.com

the fashion sector “already produces up to 100 billion clothes a year. (…) The British Fashion Council calculates that with the clothing, shoes and accessories at our disposal [to date] we could dress the next 6 generations. ( …) Some countries have already been active for some time, showing for example that an extended producer responsibility policy can increase collection and recycling rates. Obviously, however, the action must be ‘system-wide’ and the regulation must be supported by increasingly effective traceability and environmental performance measurement systems”.

These speeches are the reconfirmation of the very important role of this Turin startup in sustainable innovation in the textile-fashion industry.

Atelier Riforma startup inaugurates its partnership with Green Pea

Torino Social Impact member Atelier Riforma has just started parthership with the sustainability retail park Green Pea, with a large innovation project on circular fashion.

Green Pea is located in Turin and is a unique place in Italy: it is a shopping center – with 5 floors and 15,000 m2 – dedicated to 360° sustainability, in particular in the sectors of mobility, energy, furniture, beauty, leisure and clothing.

The Green Pea building is built in a circular perspective, recovering wood from the forests destroyed by the 2018 Vaia storm and is painted with Airlite, the paint that eliminates pollutants. It is powered by renewable energy (photovoltaic panels, mini wind turbines and even piezoelectric floors that produce energy thanks to people walking) and includes more than 2000 plants inside and on the terraces.

Thanks to Atelier Riforma’s great experience and research on circular fashion, the startup was involved in an ambitious project: to create in Green Pea the first large physical hub in Italy dedicated to circular fashion: from second-hand and vintage, to creative upcycling, to the use of deadstock fabrics, to products obtained from textile recycling, etc. The startup’s involvement came through Green Pea’s new CEO, Marco Piarulli, who believed in this collaboration from the beginning.

“Circularity in fashion is made up of many aspects: from the production, putting used colthes back into circulation, using recycled and deadstock textiles, upcycling discarded garments through tailoring; but it also involves educating consumers to take care of their garments and extend their life (repair, “homemade” upcycling); and goes as far as the responsible management of clothing at the end of their lifespan, directing them towards circular processes and “closing the loop” and avoiding waste. Our innovation project in Green Pea will concern all these aspects!” – Elena Ferrero, CEO of Atelier Riforma

The startup also aims to make Green Pea’s fashion department an aggregator of virtuous practices and a physical showcase for all those brands that believe in responsible and circular fashion and do not exploit natural resources, but know – with competence and creativity – how to valorize “waste” as a resource.

We will start to see the fruits of this partnership in the next few days. For November 24-25-26, in fact, Green Pea has organized the “Circular Days“, a three-day festival dedicated to the circular economy, as an alternative to the classic compulsive buying of Black Friday. Atelier Riforma – together with the many other entities that collaborate with Green Pea – also organized many activities for this event, from a swap party, to talks, to upcycling workshops, to a practical display of how Re4Circular works, to a ” circular market” with second-hand and upcycling brands.

“We have lots of ideas in store for this project and we will reveal them in the coming months! We are truly honored by this opportunity, which will allow us to put to good use all the skills we have gained over the years in the field of circularity applied to the fashion sector.” – Elena Ferrero, CEO of Atelier Riforma

Guber Banca actively engages in the fight against the housing emergency and invests in the Homes4All society

Guber Banca has acquired a minority stake in the social innovation startup B Corp benefit company ‘Homes4All.’

The Brescia-based bank, a rapidly growing challenger bank and leader in NPE (Non-Performing Exposures) and SME services, has announced a collaboration of significant social value, aligning with its values and ESG projects. The Board of Directors has given the green light for the acquisition of a minority stake in ‘Homes4All Srl innovative startup B Corp benefit society’ (‘H4A’).

Certified as a B Corp, H4A is a Benefit Company founded in 2019 in Turin with a mission to create new affordable and quality housing models, promoting sustainable balance between free access to a fundamental asset like a home and the profit of private investors. H4A aims to become a reference point in national social housing, an area where initiatives are currently fragmented, and to have a significant impact on the country socially, economically, and environmentally.

Following Guber’s efforts in support of the ‘Fondo Salva Casa,’ a project designed to provide an alternative financial plan for those at risk of losing their homes due to economic difficulties, the partnership with H4A signifies a further commitment to the issue of the housing emergency.

In this context, Homes4All represents true innovation, having developed a model capable of evaluating and measuring the results of its operations to provide investors with ethical and profitable opportunities.

Francesca Bazoli, President of Guber Banca, stated: ‘The acquisition of a minority stake in Homes4All is an integral part of a broader project aimed at combining business success with initiatives that have a social impact on the territory. The housing emergency has always been a very sensitive issue at Guber, as evidenced by our proactive work on the ‘Fondo Salva Casa,’ a measure designed to assist small property owners in difficulty. We are very pleased to be part of Homes4All, which we believe is capable of generating an even more significant social impact on individuals, communities, and the environment‘.

Mario Montalcini, CEO of Homes4All, said: ‘We are proud that Guber Banca, the national expert in credit management, central to the operations of Homes4All, and recognized in the industry for its commitment to developing initiatives that promote crucial issues such as environmental sustainability, social inclusion, financial education, and community support, has decided to join our company. We welcome their choice with enthusiasm, which will certainly contribute to accelerating our national growth path by combining the right technical expertise on the issue of the housing emergency‘.

Guber Banca

Guber, founded in 1991 by Francesco Guarneri and Gianluigi Bertini as a specialized credit management operator, was the first Italian bank to receive new authorization from the European Central Bank in 2018. Five years after its founding, it ranks among the leading operators in the sector with over 11 billion euros of credits under management. The innovative market approach and the Bank’s ability to adapt to the most diverse situations over time have allowed the development of multiple services to support SMEs in their growth processes. NPL (Non-Performing Loan) and UTP (Unlikely to Pay) management has been complemented by new businesses such as financial operations in special situations, purchase of tax credits, evolved factoring, advisory, due diligence, and real estate consulting, among others. Today, Guber Banca is an innovative, dynamic, and rapidly growing challenger bank where digital merges with the human factor in a virtuous intertwining: ‘Guber Banca – digital, but human first.’

On November 7th, the presentation event of the research conducted by the MIRA Observatory took place

On November 7th, the presentation event of the research conducted by the MIRA Observatory took place, focusing on the socio-economic impact generated by the winning initiatives of the ‘Wonder’ grant

The event ‘The Design of Social Innovation: The Wonder Case,’ held on November 7th at the Circolo del Design, was a unique opportunity to relive the entire journey outlined by the ‘WONDER. Experiments in design for social innovation‘ grant. This initiative, promoted in 2020 by the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, aimed to develop design projects capable of generating innovative solutions in response to the social needs of the territory, with a green perspective.

Throughout the morning, which saw the participation of representatives from all the entities involved in the initiative, the research ‘WONDER: Experiments in design for social innovation’ was presented, useful for defining the long-term socio-economic impact generated by each project.

The research, promoted by the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation and conducted by the MIRA Observatory of the Circolo del Design, was also aimed at identifying the policy implications of the experimentation for the Turin philanthropic foundation, as well as the impacts that the journey had on the participating organizations and the involved designers. If you wish to download the complete research, visit this link.

Born within the framework of the ‘Create Attractiveness Mission‘ of the ‘Cultural Objective‘ and developed in collaboration with the Circolo del Design and Torino Social Impact, the Wonder Grant was addressed to designers and third sector entities to create projects useful for generating innovative solutions and services, with a high social impact, capable of responding to the challenges posed by the green transition.

The main objective was to bring together the world of the third sector with that of design, pursuing the dual purpose of empowering third-sector entities and opening up a new market for designers, on one hand, and generating a positive impact on territories and reference communities, on the other.

Cortili in Azione – La bellezza come bene comune‘ (Courtyards in Action – Beauty as a Common Good), ‘FFP – Frassati FoodPrint,’ ‘GYGA – Green Young Gaming Ambassadors,’ ‘Limes – Da margine a cerniera‘ (Limes – From Margin to Hinge), and ‘ICONICA‘ are the names of the 5 winning projects, whose impact was analyzed in the research developed by MIRA. The Social Impact Exchange highlighted on the EU Social Economy Gateway portal

The social economy portal is a unique website that provides social economy entities with information on EU funding, training opportunities, events, country-specific information, and where to find additional resources as a tool for capacity development.

The idea of creating a website to gather relevant information for the social economy stemmed from consultations with various stakeholders during the development of the action plan for the social economy. The European Commission embraced this idea and integrated the social economy portal as one of the ten key actions of the plan.

The best practice of the Social Impact Exchange is now featured on the portal: a significant recognition of the value and originality of the experimentation developed within the strategic plan of Torino Social Impact.

Inclusive Social Growth: A Discussion in Turin Thanks to the Annual Convention of the Microlab Association

The annual convention of the Business Mentors of the MicroLab Association took place on October 20th and 21st in Turin, at Serming. The meeting, always a moment of encounter and exchange of best practices among the voluntary mentors of the association, addressed the theme of inclusive growth, thanks also to exceptional guests.

In this setting of the Arsenal of Peace, we want to recall with pleasure the contribution made to society in these twenty years of activity of the MicroLab Association,” declares Andrea Garello Cantoni, President of the MicroLab Association. “By offering services to the most vulnerable groups to help them enter the world of work and self-employment, through guidance, training, and mentoring. Over these years, more than 500 voluntary business mentors have taken turns, we have trained over 8,000 people on starting a business and financial education, supported 2,000 with one-to-one mentoring paths to start their own business, and helped in the delicate phase of job orientation for 1,000 young people looking for their first job.

Daniele Frigeri, President of CeSpi, the Center for International Political Studies, was present at the convention. He has conducted analyses and research on the financial inclusion of foreign citizens for the past 10 years. He stated, “Financial inclusion, through all types of financial instruments available (credit, savings, investments, insurance, and the payment system), is an enabling factor for an individual to develop their projects over time, and thus becomes a fundamental piece of the socio-economic inclusion process in a society. In Italy, over 5 million citizens who were born abroad and have now chosen Italy live. Their condition as ‘immigrants’ puts them in a condition of multiple vulnerability; financial inclusion, understood not only as access but also as the effective use of financial instruments, can make a difference. Monitoring the financial inclusion process becomes fundamental to understanding needs and how they change over time, also following changes in external conditions (such as the pandemic or the crisis related to inflation), and accompanying this journey towards a mature financial profile.

Remotely connected, Lucia Bucciarelli Ducci, Country Manager CEB, Development Bank of the Council of Europe, the oldest multilateral financial institution after the World Bank, with the peculiarity of having social purposes, said, “Europe has faced and is facing a series of discouraging challenges: from COVID-19 to the ongoing climate emergency, to the Russian aggression in Ukraine, not to mention the impact of these crises on our economies. In this context, vulnerable people are the most affected, and the poor investments in social sectors further worsen the situation.

In 2022, the CEB member states approved the new Strategic Plan 2023-2027, which defines a series of ambitious objectives, also in response to these challenges, on three lines of action: Investing in people and enhancing human capital, Promoting inclusive and resilient living environments, and Supporting employment and economic and financial inclusion. Microfinance and support for the most vulnerable are at the center of these objectives, and the long-standing cooperation with MicroLab confirms this.

Also present was Juri Di Molfetta, President of the A Pieno Titolo Association Onlus, which since 2012 has been accompanying third-country citizens in the process of recognizing qualifications obtained abroad: “Foreigners residing in Italy are often pushed to take on much humbler job positions than they could aspire to, giving rise to a model of subaltern integration, in which the foreign citizen renounces in most cases to follow a path in line with their studies and their professional profile acquired abroad. The A Pieno Titolo ONLUS association therefore aims with its projects and orientation services in the territory to favor the integration of the foreign citizen in the world of work and in the territorial context, enhancing the curricula of study and professionals matured in foreign countries, favoring their formal recognition in Italy and making skills and professionalism, for now, little valued in the local economic system, usable.

During the convention, the business mentors of the association had the opportunity to discuss their mentoring experiences and devise new practices such as co-mentoring, to better support the beneficiaries of the association.

NEET: Second Workshop of the Community of Practice

On Friday, October 10, the second meeting of the community of practice focused on initiatives for young NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) took place, addressing young individuals not engaged in education, employment, or training.

The initiative is part of the broader Community of Practice project, realized with the support of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation.

The online meeting also featured Alessia Gianoncelli, Director of Knowledge and Programs at EVPA, the European network that brings together over 300 organizations dedicated to impact finance. The aim was to explore funding opportunities to support social impact projects carried out by organizations in Turin.

Following the first meeting, during which ecosystem organizations shared their mission, project progress, and initiatives related to the NEET phenomenon, the second meeting of the Community of Practice focused on two specific questions: “How are your initiatives in support of NEETs funded?” and “Do you think there is a need for more funding? If so, what characteristics should it have?”

A total of 13 organizations participated in the meeting. In addition to accessing resources, the discussion also delved into the magnitude of public and private calls for proposals, beneficiaries of activated projects, and the relationship between competition and collaboration within these calls. These topics facilitated a constructive exchange, allowing for the sharing of experiences, limitations, and possibilities.

Tuesday, November 21, a conference for non-profit organizations (ONLUS) called to decide on their future

The ONLUS organizations are called in the coming months to definitively decide what will become of their future. The reform of the Third Sector, by redefining the regulations that characterize all organizations operating in the non-profit world, has imposed some radical changes, including the elimination of the ONLUS qualification and the consequent repeal of the related legislation. What to do, then, to avoid disappearing altogether? How to adapt to this new and imminent scenario?

To help and support ONLUS in this challenging transition phase, the Voluntary Service Center Vol.To ETS has organized the conference “The choice of ONLUS: to be or not to be an ETS, that is the question.” The event will take place on Tuesday, November 21, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, at the Polo del 900 (Via del Carmine 14, Turin). The conference, with the contribution of Third Sector experts and officials from the Piedmont Region, will try to clarify some themes: the advantages and disadvantages of registration in the RUNTS, and related timing; the transition from ONLUS to various types of ETS and the consequent classification of volunteers; the devolution of assets if the ONLUS decides not to transform into a Third Sector Entity; and the possible operational criticalities in the RUNTS registration.

Indeed, the reform of the Third Sector has provided for the creation of the qualification “Third Sector Entity” (ETS) to be applied to all non-profit entities that carry out activities of general interest, pursue civic, solidarity, and social utility purposes, and register with the RUNTS – National Unique Register of Third Sector Entities. As there is no automatic transformation, ONLUS must decide whether to become ETS and in which type they are most suitable to transform (voluntary organizations; associations for social promotion; social enterprises, including current social cooperatives; philanthropic entities; associative networks; mutual aid societies; other entities), or alternatively, they must devolve their assets and dissolve permanently.

ONLUS intending to enter the Third Sector and modify their type as provided by the Third Sector Code have until March 31 of the year following the obtaining of authorization from the European Commission regarding the new tax regime of the Third Sector: therefore, it will be in 2024 if this pronouncement occurs by the end of 2023. In Piedmont, the ONLUS registered with the Revenue Agency (data updated to October 5) that have not yet made the choice to qualify as ETS are still the vast majority (1725); the same trend is also seen for the Metropolitan City of Turin, with 1056 ONLUS still uncertain about what to do. ONLUS that have already chosen to become ETS are only 259 in Piedmont and 151 in Turin.

PROGRAM:

  • Advantages and disadvantages of registration in the RUNTS and related timing;
  • Transition from ONLUS to various types of ETS and the classification of volunteers;
  • Possible operational criticalities in the RUNTS registration.

Communicating Disabilities: A Free Seminar in Biella to Explore the World of Disabilities and the Vocabulary to Express It

Communicating Disabilities is a free training event aimed at gaining insights into the world of disabilities and the language to effectively convey it. The seminar is organized by Fondazione CR Biella, Fondazione Time2, Impresa Sociale Con i Bambini and Cascina Oremo.

When: Thursday, November 30, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM
Where: Cascina Oremo, Corso Giuseppe Pella, 21, Biella

Language holds the power to reshape our perceptions of reality, influencing the positions individuals and social groups hold within it.

This is particularly true for individuals with disabilities, as they are often depicted as ‘children,’ eternally youthful; or as ‘superheroes,’ celebrated for their efforts to overcome barriers and limitations; or simply as ‘them,’ a homogeneous and distinct group set apart from ‘us.’

How do individuals with disabilities wish to be represented and portrayed today? What influence do social and cultural professionals, as well as communication professionals, have in either promoting or hindering narratives that either expand or diminish the space for recognizing the rights of people with disabilities?

Speakers:

  • Valentina Tomirotti, freelance journalist, disability activist
  • Federica Chilà, journalist, communication manager at Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Biella
  • Laura Galesi, journalist, press office at Con i Bambini
  • Fabrizio Vespa, journalist, press office at CPD Consulta per le Persone in Difficoltà

‘Urban innovation ecosystems and European funds’: a talk by Torino Social Impact at Designing Europe

On 7 and 8 November, Designing Europe, the online event dedicated to the world of European design, takes place. Organised by Quality Culture, the edition hosts a total of 8 panels and 14 guests coming from the digital world, communication, Italian universities and national associations to provide advice, experiences and perspectives in the field of Eurodesign.

Torino Social Impact is among the guests of Designing Europe and on Tuesday 7 November took part in the panel ‘Urban innovation ecosystems and European funds: networking to strengthen territories‘.

The meeting opened with the greetings of Carmelo Galeano, member of Quality Culture, who presented Torino Social Impact and Fondazione Innovazione Urbana, two realities that share a mission: to promote participation in the territory through urban innovation ecosystems.

The panel was facilitated by Francesco Errani, Officer Regione Emilia-Romagna, who interfaced with speakers Marta Meloni, Eu Project manager of Fondazione Innovazione Urbana and Raffaella Scalisi, advisor of Torino Social Impact.

Marta Meloni, through her speech “Glances and horizons in the territories. Local synergies and complementarities from a European perspective”, she spoke about the experience of the Urban Innovation Foundation (FIU), as a multidisciplinary centre for research, development, co-production and communication of urban transformations at the service of the construction of the future imaginary of the city of Bologna.

Through the presentation of a number of projects launched in the area, she emphasised the importance of relating to European funds, and consequently to other European realities, in order to enrich the Foundation’s activities in a synergic manner. An opportunity, therefore, to put social and human capital at the centre of public choices, promoting relationships.

This was followed by Raffaella Scalisi’s speech, through the presentation of Torino Social Impact and the projects that promote learning, from a collaborative perspective, of the subjects that are part of the ecosystem. These included a special focus on the EU Projet Hub for Social Economy project, launched in collaboration with Weco Impresa Sociale thanks to the contribution of the Turin Chamber of Commerce and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, aimed at enhancing the ecosystem’s skills on Europlanning to seize the many opportunities opening up at EU level.

Googreen Biodiversity Market – November 2023

November brings winter, but this year, it adorns the Sambuy Garden with light and warmth, and, during the usual second Sunday of the month, the Googreen Biodiversity Market will once again be a backdrop for art, culture, and good practices.

On November 2nd, the “AZZURROGIALLO” Artist’s Light by Giorgio Griffa lit up the park and gazebo, where the blue and yellow of the luminous spirals recall Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” as well as the colors of Ukraine, as a sign of fraternity.

On the same date, coinciding with Artissima, the installation by Iranian artist Bahar Heidarzade was inaugurated for the Art Site Fest project. It creates a path in the Sambuy Garden that highlights the roots of the trees through gold leaf and dye, inviting us to raise our gaze towards the branches, crossing them with colorful lines of connection and dialogue. The meaning of Heidarzade’s intervention arises from the need to forge a deeper connection between nature and culture, seeking, in the roots of our being, as in all living things, a precious resource that we too often fail to grasp.

Inspired by a similar spirit of respect, brotherhood, and sisterhood, the CLOveCHARD exhibition was inaugurated on November 6th. It features sculptural and poetic works dedicated to the homeless and will remain on display on the benches of the Sambuy Garden until November 15th.

Conceived by Raffaele Palma for CAUS Centro Arti Umoristiche e Satiriche in collaboration with 14 sculptors, an equal number of multidimensional, polymaterial works were created and placed on some of the benches in the garden. During the exhibition-event’s setup, a section dedicated to poetry with texts written by 22 poets and printed on leaflets is given to the public for free with the aim of raising awareness among the public and city authorities to provide concrete help and urgent assistance to those living on the streets, especially as the winter season is about to begin.

On Sunday, the 12th, we begin the day as usual with friends from Paranza del Geco and a free pizzica lesson in the garden (free event, reservation appreciated: La Paranza del Geco). We will also resume the activities of the PHILOSOPHICAL BENCH, which, in conjunction with the “CLOveCHARD” exhibition-event, will have philosophers from FILOSOFIA IN atTO offering a dialogic stroll among the voices, silences, and thoughts that the contemplation of Bahar Heydarzade’s sculptures and pictorial interventions will evoke.

Starting from the “philosophical bench” at the center of the park, at 12:00 and 4:00 PM, the walks with philosophers and poets will lead participants to shared reflections, reasoning, and new resolutions. (Free event, reservation appreciated: info@filosofiainatto.it)

Terra&Tech. The first innovation program for the viticulture of tomorrow

The association “Filiera Futura” in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino’s Incubator I3P, is launching the national initiative “Terra&Tech,” the first open innovation program for the viticulture of tomorrow.

The goal of this initiative is to identify the needs within the world of winemaking by engaging directly with the main actors in the sector: the producers and wineries. Once the critical issues and needs expressed by the industry’s key players have been gathered, a call for startups will be launched, crucial for involving innovative entrepreneurial entities capable of implementing solutions tailored to the identified needs.

Enterprises indeed play an increasingly crucial role on a national level, especially in relation to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and European policies. A traditional and deeply-rooted sector, such as the wine industry in Italy, can only benefit from the innovation introduced by startups and SMEs that develop advanced technological solutions for the entire sector’s competitiveness.

It is essential to promote the modernization and digitalization of agriculture and the wine startups that are embracing this challenge. Emerging technologies like the Internet of Things and data analytics allow for more efficient vineyard management, reducing environmental impacts. Moreover, they enhance product traceability, further strengthening the reputation of Italian wine. The hope of this presentation is to initiate new innovation processes to be carried out in collaboration with and in the regions, positioning and consolidating the value and quality of the Italian wine supply chain globally.

How to Participate

The presentation event, with free admission, will take place in person at the Joule Room of Cariplo Factory, at Via Bergognone 34, corner of Via Tortona, in Milan. Participation is open to journalists, industry professionals, and stakeholders from the sector, representatives of Italian consortia, startups, and innovative companies, wine lovers, and technology enthusiasts.

Seats are limited. To participate, registration is required on Eventbrite at the following link.

Following the event, there will be a national workshop series, with stops in various Italian provinces in the first half of 2024 to bring together and engage local stakeholders in the wine sector.

DAVIDE RUZZON for FACE to Face Architetti in contatto

Face To Face

Architects in Contact
Organized and promoted by the Turin Architecture Foundation

Davide Ruzzon

Thursday, November 9th, from 6 PM to 8 PM at Combo in Turin

On Thursday, November 9th, from 6 PM to 8 PM, Davide Ruzzon, Director of NAAD, Neuroscience Applied to Architectural Design, at the IUAV University of Venice, as part of the ‘Face to Face’ lecture series organized by the Turin Architecture Foundation, will explain how neuroscience helps to harmonize architecture with people’s needs and expectations, creating an empathetic space capable of generating emotions and placing people at the center of architectural design.

“Why is it that in just a few milliseconds, we can tell whether an environment attracts us or repels us?

Our bodies, long before our minds, process the data that perception gathers. It is the body’s memory, in other words, emotions, that summarizes this in the blink of an eye. Not understanding these processes can compromise the outcome of the project, provided that the well-being of people is at the heart of the interest.

What impact can an environment that does not meet our emotional expectations have on physical and mental health? What does it mean to make our experiences meaningful through a space of quality?

What is the relationship between space quality, memory, and health?”

Case studies include: Ernst & Young offices in Rome, SEA Linate Airport, Prologis Somaglia Lodi Logistics Platform, Ferrante Aporti Juvenile Prison in Turin.

Face To Face – Architects in Contact is a multi-stage event, promoted and organized by the Turin Architecture Foundation, which has featured the participation of five of the most interesting architectural collectives and studios in Italy: from Fosbury Architecture to Sex & the City, Annalisa Metta, Studio Nemesi, and Davide Ruzzon.

Throughout the event, various topics related to quality architecture have been addressed, including specific and contemporary issues. It is open to everyone, especially those involved in the design and transformation of spaces from an updated, inclusive, and sustainable perspective.
